Addressing ASB In Spitalfields
While the key focus of SPIRE is to review and address new and/or amended alcohol license applications in Spitalfields, SPIRE proactively gets involved with related issues in support of combating anti-social behaviour. Examples include getting involved with review of local policies and programmes as they relate to anti-social behaviour prevention and/or supporting complaints of Spitalfields’ residents who experience anti-social behaviour in respect to existing license holders.
While residents of Spitalfields are strongly encouraged, where possible, to first address their complaint(s) with local business owners directly, there may be times where complaints need to be escalated for further review & potential action.
In such cases, individuals and/or associated resident groups are encouraged to do one or more of the following:
If there is an incident where a situation could get heated or violent very soon, or if you and/or someone else is in immediate danger, call the Metropolitan Police* on 999;
Report anti-social behaviour directly to the Metropolitan Police* (this may either be reported online or by calling 101);
Contact the Tower Hamlets Licensing and Safety Team* (e-mail: licensing@towerhamlets.gov.uk or phone: +44 (0) 20 7364 5008) directly to discuss concerns of how a licensed premise may be breaching conditions of their license and/or contributing to anti-social behaviour in the area; and
Contact SPIRE at SPIRESpitalfields@gmail.com to discuss unresolved efforts to stop anti-social behaviour involving existing license holders in the neighbourhood. All efforts will be made to respond to requests for assistance within 24-48 hours of receipt.
*This is important as statistics about formal complaints to the Metropolitan Police and Tower Hamlet’s Licensing Department are tracked and used to report on the prevalence of anti-social behaviour in the area. These statistics are used to drive policies and programmes for the benefit of the community. Unreported cases of anti-social behaviour mask the true impact of irresponsible licensed premises in the area.
